RESEARCH - Previous Student Film Opening

SIGNATURE

In this film opening, there are hints of intertextuality from Psycho. For example, its set in the bathroom, everything is white, you can hear water droplets and there is a close up of the tap and the plughole is shown.

Camera
There are many different shots used. for example there is a mid shot in the beginning to show the setting that the scene takes place in (bathroom). There is a close up of the taps which indicate that this could be an important part of the film. There is a close up of her eye while she is applying make. And also there is an over the shoulder shot of the girl looking into the mirror so you can see her reflection. This may be to give an effect to the audience that she is not alone.

Mise en Scene

There are close ups of her applying lipstick and it shows her make up bag in a separate shot. There are repetitive shots of the plastic toy floating around at four separate times within the opening. This suggests that this is a vital prop within this scene. In the fourth repetitive shot, you can see someone's fingers but only a little glance. This makes the audience feel curious as to who is in the water and if they are dead or not. Once the dead body is shown, you see the girl fix the tie on the dead guy in the bath tub. This could be a clue that links in with the film title 'Signature'

Editing
The editing in this film opening is quite slow paced. This creates a tense atmosphere as you don't really know what is happening except for what is shown and you don't know what to expect either. The titles are simply edited. The ident and production company are edited in a way where they both come from the same text. The next set of titles are placed over a black screen with the titles fading in and out.

Sound
There is a eery non diegetic music playing in the background while the girl is getting ready. This gives the audience the impression that something bad is going to happen. Also there is a overlapping sound of water dripping from the taps. This tells us that water maybe an important element in the film.

RESEARCH - Health and Safety

 HEALTH AND SAFETY

We were taught how to use the camera properly so we don't damage it. For example, we learnt how to insert the battery properly, how to insert the memory card and how to switch from card A to card B, how to record, playback, focus the camera and two different ways of zooming in and out. As well as this, we also were taught how to attach the camera on to the tripod safely and securely to ensure that it doesn't fall off at any given time while we are recording. we were also told that we shouldn't keep any of the equipment unattended as it would be at risk of being stolen. Once we are done with the equipment we have borrowed we should check and make sure we have everything we started out with and pack them away properly.

We were also taught that location is key. If we wanted to film in a public place we must have permission. For example, to film at the train station would be hard because the process of recieving permission is long and most likely they would say no. Also filming in dangerous places would get us disqualified. For example, filming on railway tracks would be a health and safety hazard. we were also taught that it would be best if we didnt film at night in a bad neighbourhood as it wouldn't be smart. we should be careful with the content in our film because we may not receive any marks if it isn't deemed appropriate.

PRACTICE: producing the storyboard

The first edit of the storyboard. We had taken photos of different scenes of the clip to put in the storyboard. However the photos that we had taken was not enough and we decided to take more pictures

Research-Health and Safety

Health and safety is very important so before we started to film outside we were taught about the dangers we could face using the equipments and location and how we can avoid it. For example we were told that we can not film in the train stations because that would be too dangerous and we were also told think about our location for example it won't be a smart idea to film in a bad neighbourhood at night.

We were taught how to actually use the camera so we won't damage it. For example we learnt how to place and eject the memory card safely, play back, zoom in and out and more. We also learnt how to safely set out the tripod and place the camera on it, for example its important to lock the camera in the tripod otherwise it would fall out and break. We can't leave the equipments unattended otherwise someone might steal it. After finishing filming we have to carefully pack our equipments and make sure not to forget to collect anything.

Research-Target audience

From the research i have done, Thriller movies are targeted to a wide range of audiences mainly from the age of 12 and over, these thriller films may not be as disturbing so that younger audiences can enjoy it. For example 'The dark knight' and 'The woman in black'

However some thriller films are targeted to older audiences because it could be too disturbing and may have too many violence, so a younger audience may not appreciated the movie.
