THE STEPFATHER
The best thing I liked about the film was how we knew who the killer was yet the characters in the movie didn't, because we saw David kill the neighbour and Jay (the dad) and manage to hide it away for so long but everyone else was clueless. I think it was a good thriller as it had many uses of false plateau as well as the bomb theory. This is because we knew from the beginning that this family would die or that something bad would happen because it was shown to us that he was the killer and that he was on the move. Because we knew, it created suspense as we were waiting for something to happen.
The title sequence used at the beginning was a narrative opening. It faded in and out over what David was doing in the bathroom. Because we were so engrossed in the narrative it makes it seem as though the titles weren't there.
The audience for this film would be older teens and adults as there are some scenes that could be disturbing to a younger audience as the film happens to be about murders.
There were a few examples of intertextuality from Psycho. One was the knife that David pulled on Susan. There is a lot of emphasis put the knife as David waves it around carelessly as he confirms his identity with himself. Also, you can hear the heavy rainfall from outside which imitates the sound of the water falling from the shower in Psycho. Also, when Susan sees the knife you hear her scream a lot which is also like the woman in Psycho.
